Rachel Ray chose never to have children, saying this is something she has been “beaten” by over the years.
The celebrity chef opened up about the issue in the latest episode of her podcast I’ll sleep when I’m deadwhere she spoke to former Biggest loser trainer Bob Harper about their respective choices not to have children and instead focus all their love on their dogs.
“I chose never to have children,” said Harper, who publicly came out as gay in the seventh episode of the fifteenth season. The biggest loser in 2013.
“Me too, and god, have I been beaten for it over the years,” Ray added before going on to talk about how her dogs provide the “unconditional love” that many parents feel for their children.
“They never talk back; they always want to hug you. It’s that unconditional love… that really gets you through dark days,” Ray said of her pets. “When I’m having the absolute worst day, I feel the best when I literally go home and crawl into bed with my dog and under a blanket.”
She also revealed that two of her deceased dogs were properly buried. “A priest came to bury them and gave us prayer cards, no joke,” she explained. “They were everything to us, and they both lived very long lives. One was over 13, one was over 15. Now we have Bella. But that continuum of humanity that animals can give to people is insane. It makes you a better person if you have an animal.”
When Ray’s dog Isaboo died in May 2020, she took to social media to write a tribute, adding: “We will open our home and our hearts to another animal in need because that is what Izzy would want.” She and her husband of 19 years, John Cusimano, later adopted Bella Boo.
“I don’t understand people who don’t want an animal in their life,” the Food Network star told Harper. “Because it just makes you happier and better and you always have this love in your life no matter what.”
When asked if he had children in 2007, Ray said People“I don’t have time. I work too much to be a suitable parent. I feel like a bad mother to my dog some days because I’m just not there enough. I just feel like I would be doing a bad job if I actually took the time to literally bring a child into the world right now and try to tie everything I do together.
Ray talks about her life in her new podcast series, including her relationship with Cusimano and how they enjoy themselves sometimes have your own space away from each other.
